President of the World Lithuanian Community (WLC) Dr. Vytautas Bieliauskas (from the US), was invited to address the inaugural convention of SĄJŪDIS on behalf of the Lithuanian diaspora. The convention was held in Vilnius on Oct. 22-23, 1988. SĄJŪDIS, a popular front movement in Lithuania, launched the country on a peaceful and lawful road to independence which was proclaimed on March 11, 1990. To mark the starting point of the journey, Dr. Bieliauskas distributed a pin to each member of the WLC executive.
