Christening Gown
Val d’Or Cadillac, Quebec, Canada
Spring 1950
In 1948, having left Displaced Person’s camps in Germany to immigrate to Canada, 42 Lithuanian men arrived to fulfill a one year work contract in Canada as miners at the Noranda Gold Mining Company in Northern Quebec.
Within a year, they were followed by their spouses and the opportunity to start a new family life began.
Remaining true to Lithuanian traditions, this christening gown was made by the baby’s godmother. With little access to money or material, this gown was sewn from the godmothers’ slip, a pillow case and lace from a disassembled lamp cover.
A few precious pink silk ribbons adorn the bonnet and gown.
